Tips To Inculcate Good Habits In Your Child

As Parents we all want our kids to develop into active, well organized, contributing individuals. But our expectations alone don’t suffice. It is our primary duty to inculcate good habits in our kids, while they are still young. This is easier said than done. Our children make us angry by their pranks, they make mistakes, they get lazy, and they indulge in silly and thoughtless activities. And what do we do? We adults react without thinking, we shout at them and often strike them; exhibiting the very behavior we’re trying to discourage. Being a doctor, I’m supposed to know how to handle people, but when it comes to controlling my exuberant little ones, even I lose control sometimes. But I always feel terrible about it later.
We need to discipline our children and that too without losing temper. We need to exhibit our calm, adult dignity while handling the little brats, but how?  This question led me to research about successful parents, who have raised, happy, well adjusted children. I found a number of techniques suggested by behavioral scientists that are aimed at teaching appropriate behavior to young ones. I’ve already started implementing these, and would suggest you to do the same, if you want peace and harmony in your household.
Remember these techniques require you to act as a role model, and that means gaining control over your temper first. So, next time you feel the steam rising, try these tips:
1.       Reorganize- Yes, reorganize your own work-schedule to decrease your stress levels. I realized that the days I was stressed due to hectic schedule or overwork were the days I had lost control of myself and hit my child for silly, harmless pranks. Re-organizing my day did wonders for me, I found more time for myself and for my family, strengthening my bond with my kids (Hmm-mm I should have talked about time-management first, but now that I have done so much of this darn typing, I won’t change the topic for this post..^_-).
2.      Make simple changes in the Environment- Many behavioral problems don’t require shouting matches or discussions, making simple changes will solve the problem immediately. For e.g. a neighbor of mine reprimands her 2 year old daily whenever he reaches for the DVD player, yet putting it on a tall cabinet or shelf will solve the problem immediately. In my house all my medicines (that I keep for dispensing), my medical books, stethoscope et al are kept in a locked cabinet, so that my 3 year old cannot reach them. Similarly, “Keep away from that door!” may be avoided by adding an inexpensive hook-lock; “Don’t watch television while having dinner!” (Why not switch off the television at dinnertime?); “How many times have I told you not to have sweets before dinner!” (Why not hide the snacks?). Get the picture? Make a note every time you catch yourself reprimanding your child. Later, contemplate whether you can resolve recurring problems with simple changes in the environment.
3.      Let your child take charge- Now this step comes under “Self-Management” tricks taught to management trainees. Use them on your child. Perhaps your son forgets to arrange his school-bag for next day and frequent reminders only result in arguments. Instead of reminding your child to pack his bag, teach him that he can remind himself of what he’s supposed to do by writing his own notes. Tell him you are teaching him “Organizational Skills”. Teach him to keep a tab on his progress as well. Most children feel great to see the progress they are making, they feel in charge!
4.       Rehearse- This and the next two tips are suggested by Robert Epstein, an eminent child psychologist. Help your child deal with difficult situations by rehearsing with them. For e.g. try role-playing situations with them. For instance, if your child is having problem dealing with a teacher at school, you may play the role of your child and let him enact the role of his teacher and try acting out different situations. He’ll learn how to handle a situation differently, and you’ll be reminded that it’s not easy being a kid!
5.      Reprimand if needed but gently- Psychologists use a technique called “Manual Guidance” to assist changes in behavior. Take this example, if your daughter is taking too long to comb her hair when you are in a rush, instead of yelling at her, gently hold her by shoulders and tell her lovingly that you’re getting late and she can finish combing in the car, then gently guide her away from the mirror. Remember, gentleness is the key here.
6.      Use Proper Signals- This technique is technically known as “Discrimination Training”. For instance you don’t want children bursting into your bedroom or changing room every time, sometimes it’s okay if they barge in but at other times it may be the worst thing in the world. Use proper signs in such cases. You may use a poster at your bedroom door, tell them it’s okay if the poster shows a big green “GO”, but if the poster shows a big red “STOP”, then they must knock before entering.
7.       Strike a Deal- This one’s the favorite of my son. We strike a “deal” before his exams. I pay him a certain amount if he scores well, for each subject. Obviously this acts as a motivational factor for him to study harder to earn more, much more effective than giving frequent reminders which he desists. Here’s another one, we make a “contract”; on a piece of paper we jot down the chore which he is supposed to do, like, resetting his wardrobe or book shelf, and what I am supposed to do in return, like, he can watch his favorite cartoon show for extra 2 hours on weekend/ promise to take him to the mall on weekend; then the “contract” is duly signed by both of us and stuck on the refrigerator door. Always set a time limit on such contracts though. You can always renew the contract and work it out your way.
8.       Be a Role-Model- This is the most powerful of all the techniques. Your children learn a lot by watching you. Your kids will imitate you sooner or later, if you shout to get your way, your children will do the same. If you watch sitcoms instead of doing your household chores, your child is likely to put off his school assignment to watch his favorite cartoon show. So, set a positive example. Read, if you want your child to imbibe a reading habit. If you want your children to apologize to you, then apologize to them whenever you make a mistake.
9.       Don’t Respond to Tantrums and Irrational Behavior- Remember, whenever your child shows temper tantrums, such as, foot stomping and rolling on floor, never respond. Just ignore them, look away, and avoid looking at them. If you are at a public place, just ignore while keeping an eye on him lest he runs away or gets hurt. But, don’t yell or speak to your kid at that time because it will only worsen the problem. This is the only way to make your child understand that he cannot have his demands fulfilled by resorting to irrational behavior. Once your kid calms down talk to him firmly yet using a gentle tone and explain to him why his demand cannot be fulfilled. Try this for 2-3 times before you see any results. This is the therapy given to treat temper tantrums in children and toddlers, and is proven to be highly effective.
10. Teach Deep Breathing Exercises- Teach deep breathing to your child. Diaphragmatic breathing helps your child calm down.Place one hand on chest and the other on abdomen both hands should move in and out when breathing. It has a rapid calming effect. If only the upper hand moves while breathing then it is a sign of stress.
In the end take a few deep breaths yourself; you must control your anger first. You might forget every sensible thing you know about parenting when you’re angry.
For very fussy children who are calmed down only by carrying them, Chamomilla is a very good Homoeopathic medicine. Chamomilla 30 / 4 pills , 4 times a day for a week, should be given to treat such children. For children who are cross and whining all the time, and do not calm down even by carrying them, Cina 30 ,4 pills/ 4 times a day is the medicine of choice.

Healthy Recipe, My Way!! Makhana-Kesar Kheer

Hello Friends! Welcome back to "Healthy Recipe, My Way!!" section of my blog. Today I'm going to share one of my favorite desserts with you all. It is healthy, low-calorie, and easy to make. I always opt for this recipe whenever I have craving for something sweet, as it is also very quick to make. I know most of my Indian friends know how to make it, but this recipe has healthy switches, my way of course!  Lets look at the ingredients now..

Ingredients:

Makhana (Fox Nut)- 1 cup
Milk- 2 and a half cup
Sugar- to taste
Blanched Almonds- 5-6
Kesar/Saffron strings- a few
Finely chopped almonds for garnishing

Method:

  •  Dry roast the Makhana in an open pan or kadhai, for 5 min at medium flame till they are crisp. Alternatively, you may microwave them on high in a microwave safe bowl for 1 minute. For those who know Makhana by some other name, here is the pic of  makhana..

  • Heat milk in a separate pan and bring it to boil, turn the flame to medium, add roasted makhanas.
  • Let it simmer on low flame, stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the bottom of the pan. Cook it for 10-12 minutes, or till the makhana are tender and milk is reduced to half.
  • Meanwhile peel and grind the blanched almonds to a fine paste (add a little milk if needed).
  • Soak Saffron strings in a little (about 2 tsp) milk for 5 minutes.
  • Add almond paste and kesar/saffron soaked in milk, to the kheer when the makhana are cooked. Also add sugar to taste. Cook for 2-3 more minutes.
  • The Kheer will be thick in consistency, and will have a yellow hue.
  • Serve in a bowl and garnish with finely chopped almonds.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Note:
  • The traditional recipe requires the makhana to be roasted in ghee, a step I have excluded. I've opted for dry roasting.
  • I've added almond paste and saffron to the recipe to enrich its taste and color, and improve its Cardiac-protective action.
  • Makhana or Fox nut's botanical name is Euryale Ferox.
  • According to Ayurveda it is "Sheet", "Snigdha", and "Madhur" (its "guna" or properties), and provides moisture to body tissues. It is best consumed during early winter, when the weather is dry and causes dryness and roughness of tissue leading to "Vata" related disorders. It alleviates "Vata" and "pitta" related disorders.
  • It also strengthens the heart and is very useful in treating anemia.
  • Combining it with milk enhances its "Vata" relieving properties.
  • Almonds further add to the cardiac protecting action of Fox nut.
  • Kesar or Saffron is rich in anti-oxidants.
  • This dessert is light and easy to digest.
  • BTW Makhana are also known for their Aphrodisiac properties (^_-) .                                                                                                     So try this quick and easy recipe to battle the approaching winter. Value Of Struggle: A Butterfly's Tale...

Years ago I read a story, I loved it so much that it became forever etched in my memory. Now its also the favorite story of my kids. I have to recite it often during our story-telling time. In this post I've decided to share this simple story with all of you. I know you'd love it too, for somewhere deep down we all still cherish those childhood memories when no day was complete without a story session.
      So here it goes...
Once upon a time ( my fav story tagline..!) there was a small boy who lived with his parents in a city. One summer vacation he went to his ancestral house with his parents, situated in a village. The house was old and large with a garden in front of it. There were many flowering plants in the garden, and almost all of them were in full bloom. Next morning while taking a stroll in the garden the little boy was delighted to see some butterflies. He had seldom seen butterflies in his city apartment. He watched them intently for the next few days.
One day he spotted some strange looking worms which were spotted, on a bush over which he had seen butterflies hovering the previous day. He was trying to remove them with a twig when his father stopped him, and told him that they were caterpillars who would soon grow to be butterflies.
The boy was curious because they looked ugly and without wings, quite a contrast to the beautiful, colorful winged  butterflies who fascinated the little boy. For the next few days he spent a lot of time watching them closely and would often try to feed them with tender green fresh leaves which they seemed to like.
Soon they enveloped themselves with a white covering. The boy was very bored now, but was told by his father that now the caterpillar would grow wings inside the cocoon and will emerge out as a butterfly. The boy waited patiently, and would check on the cocoon every now and then. Then one morning he saw a small butterfly trying to come out of the cocoon. The cocoon had a very small opening, and the butterfly was struggling hard to come out of it. But its wings seemed large for the cocoon and were stuck.

The boy could wait no more, he decided to help the little butterfly and tore the cocoon to make it easy for the butterfly to come out. The butterfly did come out, but it seemed strange, its wings were very fragile and small, and its body was swollen, it crawled abruptly and seemed it could not fly.
Confused, the boy called out to his father. He narrated whatever had happened to his father and was in tears. His father consoled him and told him what went amiss. Struggling to get out of the cocoon was the most essential part of the butterfly's growth. Struggling and wiggling to come out of the narrow opening of cocoon, would have squeezed out the trunk of the butterfly and would have forced its fluid to go into the wings, making them bigger and strong enough to fly.
Likewise struggles in one's life are a necessary part of one's growth. Struggles wriggle out our shortcomings and insecurities and bring our hidden talents to fore. Struggles make us stronger and capable of tackling life's queer twists and turns with ease. Struggles force you to move out of your comfort zone and break your own barriers.
If you are facing struggles in your life, have a positive outlook, use them to make a better person out of you, use them as opportunities to explore new horizons. Remember, leading a too comfortable life is like being encased in a cocoon, it hampers your growth.
This story always infuses me with positivity, and I want to spread those positive vibes to all my wonderful friends. Linking to Patty's Colours decor weekly party, as I want to spread positivity and happiness to as many people as possible. Staying positive enhances creativity and keeps you stress free. On this positive note, its time to sign off. Thanks for hearing me out, have a great life ahead!!

Healthy Recipe, My Way!! Healthy Chocolate Cake Recipe.

Hi Friends! Sorry for being away for a long time. Was caught up in the Festive frenzy, also had a couple of guests. I'm sure you all must be busy celebrating too. By the way I also utilized this time to try my hands at a couple of delicacies, albeit with a healthy switch, my way of-course! In fact worried by the newsflash about the adulteration of sweets, I made all the sweets for Diwali myself. Will share all the recipes one by one.Cooking has been my favorite hobby since I was in High School; now being a Doctor and a Nutritionist I use my knowledge in making healthy switches to all I cook. I decided to share my recipes under "Healthy Recipe, My Way" section through my Blog after witnessing an alarming rise in cases of Hypertension, Diabetes, and Heart Diseases in last 5-6 years, as a practitioner.
For this post I decided to share with ya al this Egg less Chocolate Cake Recipe. This was the first time I had attempted to bake an egg less cake, and found it to be as tasty as the one with egg. I found an egg less vanilla cake recipe by Sharmilee at Sharmi's Passions, tried the original version with success, thanks to Sharmilee for the accurate proportions; and made a few switches to make the recipe more heart friendly.  After the recipe was approved by the Quality Department( Hubby n kids ^_-), through stringent quality tests( tasting n re-tasting) I finally had the confidence to share it through my blog.
Here's the recipe, I've retained the basic proportions of Sharmilee's recipe and added a few ingredients.

   Ingredients:

  1.       Refined Flour-1 and a half cup;
  2.       Thick curd- 1 and 1/4 cup
  3.       EV Olive Oil- 1/4 cup
  4.       Baking Pd- 1 and 1/4 tsp
  5.       Baking Soda- 1/2 tsp
  6.       Sugar- 1 cup ( may use 3/4 cup for less sweet version)
  7.       Cocoa Pd- 3 tsp
  8.       Almonds, Walnuts, Raisins- a handful

   Method:

  • In a mixing bowl sieve together Refined flour or Maida and Cocoa Pd. Do it twice so that the mix is uniformly blended . See the pics below-

  •  Add chopped Almonds, Walnuts, and Raisins to the mix and coat them with the flour mix using your hand, this step will ensure that the dry fruits will not settle to the bottom of the batter upon baking. Here're the pics to illustrate this further-

  •  Keep the mix aside.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, mix with a blender/ whipper, curd and sugar, till the sugar dissolves completely.
  • Add Baking Pd and Baking Soda to the above mix and blend the ingredients well.

  •   Leave aside the mix for 5 minutes, the mix will appear frothy now. See the pic below

  • Now add the flour mix to the mix above in small portions, stirring continuously to blend them well and to avoid lump formation.
  • Blend the entire mix well with a blender/ whipper to form a smooth and thick paste like batter.
  • Preheat the Oven.
  • Meanwhile, layer a cake tin with greased butter paper and pour the cake batter into it.
  • Set your Oven Temperature to 200 degree C, and place the cake tin with batter in the preheated Oven. Bake at this temp. for 10 minutes.
  • Now reduce the Oven Temperature to 180 degree C and bake further for 30-35 minutes.
  • Insert a clean toothpick in the center of the cake, if it comes out clean then the cake is fully baked, else cover the top of the cake with a butter paper and bake it for further 5 min.
  • Let the cake cool for 10 min. and then invert the tin over a plate.
  • Slice the cake. Its ready to eat now.

Note:
  1. The original recipe was a Vanilla Sponge Cake. I added cocoa pd and skipped vanilla essence to make a Chocolate Cake.
  2. The original recipe had 1 cup of curd and 1/2 cup of veg. oil. But Sharmilee had suggested that the curd's quantity can be raised to 1 and 1/4 with 1/4 cup of veg oil. I used this suggestion and switched the veg oil to EV Olive Oil.
  3. I also added Almonds, Walnuts and Raisins to the recipe.
  4. EV Olive Oil is very good for Heart and has many Anti-oxidant benefits.
  5. The dry fruit options I have used are all well known Cardiac-protectors.
  6. Cocoa Pd adds to the anti-oxidant benefits .
  7. I had also tried this recipe using Whole-wheat flour, the cake was good and loved by my kids but was less spongy.
  8. Using curd instead of eggs is also healthy as eggs are a rich source of Cholesterol.
So try out this Healthy Cake Recipe, and that too without guilt because EV Olive Oil used in this recipe also helps in Weight Reduction, but don't go overboard with the quantity of oil. So what are you waiting for eat away to a healthier and slimmer you. More Health recipes in line for the next posts, so keep watching this space for a smart living!!

Look gorgeous this Festive season

Its Festive time of the year once again. Like everyone around, this festive frenzy has caught hold of me too. We all know those days of rigorous cleaning around the house, resetting of the wardrobes, bringing out the winter clothing out of the closet, redecorating the house, umpteen shopping sprees and hence overexposure to the harsh sunlight, unhealthy and binge eating(not for me though I always choose light and healthy eating options even in the market place). Obviously with such a tight schedule who gets time for exercise or skincare! To top it all, this changing weather is also favorable for viral and bacterial infections.
So, I got a real shocker when I saw my tanned, dry looking, tired face in the mirror last weekend while checking out the beautiful new outfit I had bought for myself. My eyes looked stressed with dark circles around them, my rigorous work hours and fasting had taken its toll on my face. I can visualize so many of you nodding in approval, especially the working mothers like me.
NO, I don’t wish to dampen your festive spirit! On the contrary I just want to remind you that having a glowing, smooth skin is mandatory to looking Gorgeous in those wonderful outfits you are planning to flaunt on the big day.
But thankfully I have been able to restore much of the glow on my face, thanks to the skin regime I’ve been following since last 7 days, my under eye circles are almost gone, my skin is smooth once again and my complexion is improving each day. Excited by my results I want to share these beauty quick fixes with you all!! Of course you would get better and long lasting results if you follow the following steps religiously and continue even after festivals.
So, here are the Top 10 easy Tips to Look Gorgeous this Festive Season…
1.       Drink Plenty Of Water- Changing weather causes skin dryness. The best way to rehydrate your skin is to have ample water, at least 10-14 glasses of water daily; especially if you have been observing fasts, like me. Take a glass of water first thing in the morning, have a glass of it half an hour before and after each major meals, take vegetable/fruit juices between meals at least twice a day, have a glass of water half an hour before retiring to bed. This way you’ll have at least 10 glasses of water a day. Remember fluid intake less than this won’t do the trick.
2.       Take Fresh Fruits- Take a bowl full of fruit salad instead of snacks between meals. Carry an apple with you to workplace or market so you can have a quick snack whenever you feel hungry or low in energy. Besides being good for cardiovascular health, apples are rich in pectin, which cause a feeling of fullness and hence cut down your chances of opting for some unhealthy snack.
3.       Massage with Olive Oil- Try this simple step, massage your arms and legs with olive oil, massage it sparingly on your face, Olive Oil is very light and rich in monounsaturated fat, so it gets easily absorbed by skin without leaving any residue. Also, despite being a little expensive than other oils, it is still a much cheaper option when compared to the skin products and beauty oils, so why not go for it.
4.       Apply a mix of Sandalwood powder and milk- Make a paste of the two, and apply it as face pack, let it dry then wash off with water. Dab on a little rosewater with a cotton ball on your face afterwards. This simple pack will take care of the suntan and will also fight sunburns.
5.        Always remove Make-up before going to bed- Use a facial wash that contains salicylic acid, to remove make-up and dislodge debris.

6.       Use a Face Serum- It reduces wrinkles, smoothens up the skin instantly, and increases exfoliation. Use it twice a day, at bedtime and as a makeup base during daytime. Use just a small amount, not more than the size of a rice grain. Besides it just takes only a minute so why wouldn’t you use it.
7.       Apply Moisturizer- Apply moisturizer on freshly washed skin. Use moisturizer atop the face-serum to enhance its effect, if you have a dry skin. For oily/ normal skin type only the face-serum would suffice. Preferably use a moisturizer with SPF 15, and which contain AHAs, vitamins.
8.       Use an under-eye roll-on- Personally I’ve been using a roll-on that is rich in caffeine. It is excellent in relieving the day-long stress in the eyes. Use it twice a day for optimum results.
9.       Deep Breathe- Deep breathe for 5 minutes, at least twice a day you can easily do it at workplace, at home while doing chores, even while shopping. Expand your lungs fully by inhaling deeply, and then exhale slowly. This will have a calming effect on you, and the increased oxygen level in your body will invigorate you. Make this all the more effective by visualizing a clear, milky white energy entering your face with each inspiration; now visualize all the disease energy, colored dark brown, being thrown out of your face with each expiration. This technique is used by Pranic Healers, do it to see the magic of it.
10.   Learn some Make-up tricks- Last but not the least, I know there’s very little time to the Festival, and if you don’t get enough time to get the whole benefit of this regime , then try out these little tricks to look a million bucks on the big day.
·         Use a foundation a shade lighter than your skin tone to combat the darkening effect of sun.
·         Go for a yellow tinted foundation which looks natural on all skin tones.
·         Use Vaseline/petroleum gel on your lips sparingly after applying lipstick to make them look fuller.
·         For brighter eyes, use a little glitter liner on upper lid, curl lashes and apply several coats of Mascara.
·         Use a concealer to lighten under eye dark circles.

It is time to signoff. Hope these tips help you the way they helped me. So without delay start implementing these Top 10 Tips and look Gorgeous this festive season. Have a great living.

My DIY Project-Madhubani Cushion Cover

Hello, all my wonderful friends! I know this Blog is about Holistic Wellness and I've been faithfully sticking to the theme in my previous posts, but this post is dedicated to all the Lovely, Creative people whose blogs I've been following, cos they are the real inspiration behind this overflow of creative juices, which had been lying dormant inside me since a long long time!

I had this off-white plain cushion cover which I decided to give a makeover by hand painting it with Acrylic colors. I took inspiration from a Madhubani painting by Vidushini, which I found on web. Since I could not trace it so I drew it free-hand on the cushion cover, and proceeded to fill colors. I selected colors that I wanted to incorporate in my existing Decor.
Sorry, I didn't take any pics of the making since I wasn't sure of the outcome, since this is the first time I've tried my hand at fabric painting.
Here's the pic of the half-finished project..

Hmm didn't look that bad to me, but the area on left side looked blank, so I decided to draw something on the left corner to balance it, also I painted the base color to copper. Here's the pic which my son took for me..

And here comes the finished product, TA DA-AA...

And now its time to experiment with the placing, I've tried it out in several ways, please do tell me your opinion on the same.
Please be honest but try not to be too harsh please!! Do consider this is my first project of this kind, and there's always scope for betterment in the next project.

So please have a dekko n KEEP INSPIRING ME AS ALWAYS!!!!!!!!

Finishing this project gave me immense pleasure, and a much needed break from my daily routine even if the break was only for an hour everyday! Creative hobbies like these also serve as memory boosters besides being the stress buster.
OOPS ...Sorry got a little carried away !!
If you like this post do feel free to register your reaction by clicking on the quick button at the end of this post, need that morale boosting :)
